Reuben Smit, M.Sc. Sturgeon Biologist I

Mr. Smit began working with sturgeon as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that provided experience handling, tagging, and collecting baseline sturgeon health data with multiple agencies. After, he began work using low-cost side scan sonar to map potential Atlantic sturgeon spawning habitats in Coastal Plain rivers of southeastern Georgia. Side scan sonar habitat mapping and freshwater mussels in Florida’s Apalachicola River became his thesis at Auburn University in Alabama, where he received a M.S. in Fisheries. Throughout his career, Mr. Smit has traveled to work in diverse environments with many fish species in Iowa, Massachusetts, Florida, Georgia, and Oregon, and is now pleased to be working with the regal White Sturgeon in Lake Roosevelt for the Spokane Tribe.
